BIOGRAPHY

Peter Sibbald grew up on the Lake Simcoe shore lands of his pioneer ancestors near Sibbald’s Point, Ontario. After completing two degrees at Queens’ University, he began freelancing for the Kingston Whig Standard in 1983 and three years later launched his magazine career covering the Boston Marathon for TIME. Since then, he has worked steadily on assignments in North America and Asia for many of the top US and Canadian magazines (please see Clients). His archive contains portraits of some of the most interesting figures of our time.

From 1995 to 1999 Peter was the official portraitist to Their Excellencies Romeo Leblanc and Diana Fowler Leblanc, Office of the Governor General of Canada.

Peter has received honours for his photography from:

  • The Canada Council
  • Advertising and Design Club of Canada
  • The National Magazine Awards
  • The Alexia Foundation for World Peace

Between assignments and other projects, Peter has turned the camera around to document the process of his own family in the making. His photographs have been collected by the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography under the auspices of the National Gallery of Canada, and bodies of his work continue to be exhibited throughout Canada.

In this era when traditional publishers are being gobbled up by internet, television and telecommunications mega-corporations, he remains an outspoken advocate for photographer’s rights, their fair and reasonable compensation, and their retention of copyright. He has been an active contributor to the group Editorial Photographers since the spring of 1999. He is a member of the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (formerly the Canadian Committee to Protect Journalists) and a letter writer for its affiliate the International Freedom of Expression eXchange Clearing House (IFEX) and a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists.

Peter resides in a rural community north of Toronto with his wife & two daughters.
